Clear AI rules for your class in five minutes.
Pick a traffic light for each kind of work. Get rules your students can read, syllabus language, a parent letter, an AI-use sheet, assignments that make cheating pointless, and a script for when you suspect misuse.
What you get
- Student rules for your grade, short and positive, with a printable traffic-light poster
- Course-policy language for your syllabus, written for your subject
- A parent-letter paragraph
- A "show your process" AI-use sheet students fill out
- Three assignment redesigns for your subject that make AI misuse pointless
- What to do when you suspect misuse, without AI detectors
Why bother
In a national EdWeek survey (Dec. 2024), 60% of educators said their district's AI policy hadn't been made clear to them or their students. About as many teachers already use AI for their own work.
Students do better with one clear answer to "Can I use AI on this?" than with a guess per assignment.
1. Your class
2. Your traffic lights
For each kind of work, pick one. You can change these per assignment later; this is your default.
Translation support is often an accommodation for English learners. A red light here shouldn't override an English-learner plan, IEP or 504 plan.
3. A few details (optional)
Your work stays on this device. Nothing is sent anywhere. Don't enter student names or private details.
1. Classroom AI rules
Short, positive and posterable. Print it big, or copy it into your slides.
2. Syllabus and course-policy language
Paste it into your syllabus, LMS page or class handbook. Edit freely.
3. Parent letter paragraph
Drop it into your welcome letter or newsletter.
4. "Show your process" AI-use sheet
Students attach it to any work where AI helped. Honest disclosure is never penalized; that is what makes students use it.
5. Three assignment redesigns
6. When you suspect AI misuse
A conversation, not a verdict. Works for any "did you do this yourself?" moment.
Redesign your next assignment with AI
Describe an assignment you're about to give. The button builds a detailed prompt with your grade, subject and traffic lights for the AI your district approves (ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, MagicSchool or another). It returns a redesign, student directions, a process checklist and conference questions.
The prompt contains no student names or student information, only your grade, subject, rules and the assignment text you type.
Get your whole department on the same page
Students follow rules more easily when every teacher uses the same ones. Send your setup to your team: the link opens this tool with your grade, subject and traffic lights already picked. It contains no names.
